Manchester United defender Phil Jones says the club are relishing being written off this season and that everyone wants them to fail.
Jones starred in United’s victory over Arsenal on Sunday, which has pulled the defending champions back into the title hunt.
The England international believes the club’s success makes people want to see them fall short of expectations.
“People want us to fail because we have won the league so many times,” Jones said.
“Everyone hates the best clubs, it’s as simple as that, and United won the league long before I was here.
“We enjoy that. We relish the test we get thrown at us every week.”
Jones believes United enjoy proving why they deserved to be champions last season and proving their critics wrong.
“We weren’t champions for nothing. We thoroughly deserved all the points we got last season.”
Deployed in a midfield role at Old Trafford on Sunday, Jones was impressive in helping United contain the talented Arsenal midfielders.
When captain Nemanja Vidic was taken off injured, Jones switched to centre back and again impressed as United kept a clean sheet to secure a 1-0 win.
“It was a great game to be involved in. Tackles were flying in, the crowd were up on their feet.
“When you get a win like that, it just makes it ever so sweet.”
