The records, trophies and milestones must really be piling up for Manchester United player/coach Ryan Giggs as he failed to realise he could break the all-time Champions League appearance record.
The Red-Devils veteran is set to overtake ex-Real Madrid and Spain legend Raul if he plays a part against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday in what would be his 145th appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, which started in 1992.
The Welshman has won the competition twice with United in 1999 and 2008 and was unaware he was on the verge of breaking yet another record.
“Really? Wow. I didn’t know that,” Giggs said during an interview with the club’s website.
“It’s a great competition and I’ve been lucky enough to win it twice and play a lot of memorable matches.
“There have been so many great players to have graced the tournament and Raul is up there as one of the very best – he has a great goal-scoring record and he’s won it three times.
“If I do pass him it will be a great source of pride for me.”
As Giggs reaches the age of 40 his playing time has become limited and this season the winger decided to joined United’s coaching staff, adding a wealth of experience.
Other United greats have commended the Welshman on another individual accolade which have all been achieved whilst at the club.
“I just can’t believe he’s nearly 40. In my playing days everyone just assumed you were finished when you reached 30, but there he is, still going strong,” said 75-year-old club legend and 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.
“As well as being a great player, Ryan is a terrific talker too, and that part of his game will be important now that he’s part of the coaching staff. It’s great he’s still linked to the club,” added England’s record goal scorer.
