Wigan manager Owen Coyle could not conceal his disappointment at losing 5-0 to Manchester City last night – but believes their ‘£200million’ squad didn’t help matters.
The Latics failed to answer any of the five goals from a rampant City side at the Etihad Stadium in the third round of the Capital One Cup and Coyle had to accept the gulf in class was too much for his side.
The Scotsman was frustrated by the way in which the Latics conceded soft goals against the Premier League side they beat in May to lift the FA Cup.
He said: “We worked ever so hard, playing against one of the elite clubs of world football, let alone English football. They made 10 changes and their team was probably worth about £200million.
“There is no getting away from it, we knew it was a tough ask. As if their starting line-up wasn’t enough, I think the three subs they brought on probably added another £100million to the tally, but I am disappointed to lose by any margin of goals.
“We gave away really soft goals. We can learn from that. It was important we got through unscathed in terms of injury and hopefully we have.”
Stevan Jovetic opened his City goal-scoring account with a double either side of Yaya Toure’s free kick after Edin Dzeko had given them a first half lead. Jesus Navas’ late strike added to Wigan’s misery to turn the defeat into a rout.
Wigan will have to shake off their disappointment quickly for their trip to Watford in the Championship on Saturday.
