Rising Manchester swimming star makes a splash at school games with 100m and 200m gold medals

By Paul Smith

Manchester swimmer Brearnna Close is intent on making a splash in the pool after claiming two gold medals at the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games.

The 16-year-old City of Manchester star was crowned 100m and 200m butterfly champion at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge at the weekend.

The Sainsbury’s School Games features more than 1,600 athletes competing in 12 sports across eight venues, and is billed as a mini Olympic Games.

Close, from Worsley, said: “I am over the moon. This is my third Sainsbury’s School Games and I have had silver and bronze medals before, and I just thought it might be my last year so I gave it everything and went for gold.

“Every year this is what I look forward to, coming and racing out of season and bonding with team members.”

The Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games, which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, was held in venues across Sheffield from 12-15 September 2013. Visitwww.2013schoolgames.com for more information.
