Latics go fox hunting: Owen Coyle’s Wigan Athletic target Championship top six ahead of Leicester trip

By Ruth Dacey

Owen Coyle’s Wigan Athletic travel to Leicester City tomorrow looking to leapfrog the hosts and move into the top six.

Just two points separate the two sides in the Skybet Championship and the Latics go into the game full of confidence after ending Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten start to season before the international break. Nigel Pearson’s Foxes suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic in their final game before the international break.

Five of Wigan’s first team players featured for their countries in international fixtures; however defender James Perch insists that this will not affect performance as they are all raring to go.

He said: “We’ve had a couple of good days training now with a couple more to go and hopefully we can arrive for the game against Leicester on Saturday with high spirits and put in a performance that can get us a win.

“Playing a side like Leicester just after the international break means we definitely have to be on our toes because if not then we won’t get the result we want.”

Wigan are very much adapting to life in the second tier with a host of new faces in the squad and boss Coyle is keen to give them time to gel.

Speakign after the 2-1 victory over Forest, he said: “Our group is still in its infancy and we’ve come up against a team who took all before them last season and were top of the table at the start of the day with an unbeaten record.”
