‘I’ll fight for my place’: Manchester City transfer target Stephan El Shaarawy opts to stay at AC Milan

By John McDougall

Manchester City’s summer transfer spending may well be at an end after target Stephan El Shaarawy vowed to fight for his future at AC Milan.

The 20-year-old Italian international’s future has come into question after the San Siro club brought in Kaka and Alessandro Matri to reinvigorate their attack.

But the forward – nicknamed the Pharoah – has dismissed suggestions he is about to leave Serie A for the Etihad Stadium and vowed to win his place in the Rossoneri side.

“I’ve decided to stay at Milan,” he told Sport Mediaset in Florence. “I’ll fight for my place in the team.

“I have made a precise decision and, no matter what offer arrives, I want to stay at Milan.

“There’s more competition in the squad now, but there will be playing time for everybody.”

New boss Manuel Pellegrini has boosted City’s squad this summer through the signings of Martin Demichelis, Alvaro Negredo, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Stevan Jovetic.

But their summer spending will not include El Shaarawy, who scored 19 goal in 46 appearances for Milan last season.

Among those who have departed the Etihad Stadium include right-back Maicon to Roma, striker Carlos Tevez to Juventus and winger Scott Sinclair on loan to West Bromwich Albion.
