Hide and seek: Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri was lost but now is found… ‘which is great’

By Tim Hyde

Samir Nasri’s time at Manchester City has tumultuous to say the least – blamed for a crucial derby defeat he has been unable to replicate the dazzling form he displayed at Arsenal.

Since his arrival from North London, Nasri hasn’t been able to make the impression he would have liked – being predominantly used as a substitute by former Blues manager Roberto Mancini.

However, after a promising performance on Monday night against Newcastle – which was rounded off by a classy right-footed finish – supporters will hope that things are on the up for Nasri.

“I lost myself a bit last season; I’ve found myself this year, which is great,” Nasri told Inforsport+.

“I want to go to the World Cup, to show to everyone the real Samir Nasri. I’ve been training for that the whole pre-season. I’ve trimmed down, I feel better.”

Nasri received his first cap for French national team in 2007 and was an integral to the team until Euro 2012.

The 26 year old had a difficult year after being exiled from the Les Bleus due to the off-pitch antics surrounding the French camp.

“The incidents at the Euro, the fact to have shut myself off from the outside, that’s not me. I’m about communicating, talking, enjoying life, and smiling all the time,” Nasri said.

Nasri’s resurgence as well as comments from City full backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy appears to suggest that the squad is responding positively to new boss Manuel Pellegrini.

The Frenchman appeared to be brimming with confidence during Monday night’s match and, after opening his scoring account for the season he is already half-way to matching his tally from last year.

“I know the coach has confidence in me,” Nasri said.

“I came on, I showed that you’re going to have to count on me this season. I went to get that goal because we need to score and I need to score points.

“I’m not afraid of competition for places, it makes me better. I have huge desire this season.”

With the prospect of wrestling back the Premier League title from Manchester United and, with the World Cup looming, Nasri will be hoping for a season of consistent performances in a crucial year of his career.
