Manchester United’s want-away striker Wayne Rooney is ignoring speculation surrounding his future and is eager to play more matches.
The England star missed the majority of United’s pre-season matches after picking up two injuries in the summer months.
Speculation suggested that Rooney’s injuries were a smokescreen used to mask the turmoil at Old Trafford as the striker began engineering an exit from the club.
However, after appearing for England last week and coming on as a substitute for United on Saturday, Rooney is keen to ‘kick on’ with the rest of the season.
“I needed the game [against Scotland] because of the couple of injuries I have suffered in pre-season,” Rooney said.
“Hopefully, I can kick on from that. I was OK although I had a few painkillers in the shoulder injury.
“It was great to have the minutes and now I’m looking forward to hopefully getting a few games.”
Rooney was impressive when he came on for United against Swansea, assisting Danny Welbeck for United’s sublime fourth goal.
However, having not trained with the first-team for the majority of pre-season Rooney is hoping to regain his sharpness.
“You always look forward to a good pre-season it’s important you do that. Unfortunately, I got the injury to my hamstring and then to my shoulder,” he said.
“It’s been disappointing but you have got to deal with it. I have been working hard on the training ground trying to get myself fit.
“I’m not 100%. It’s only my first competitive game.”
