Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane was disappointed with his side’s poor performance as the Super League leaders were beaten by Castleford Tigers.
Kirk Dixon – who kicked six points – Grant Millington and James Clare all crossed for the visitors with Josh Charnley’s score the only response from the home side.
And Wane, whose team have now lost consecutive games after Monday’s defeat against Warrington Wolves, praised the Tigers for their efforts.
“It was a poor performance,” he told BBC Sport. “I thought Castleford were really good. They defended well and handled the conditions better than us.
“I want to commend them because Daryl Powell has done a great job while he has been there and the best team won. Castleford are the best team we have had here.”
The Tigers took the lead on 20 minutes when a huge hit on Lewis Tierney caused him to drop the ball allowing Dixon to touch down and then convert his own try.
Grant Millington then increased the advantage, collecting Jordan Tansey’s offload to score before Dixon added the extras to give Castleford a 12-point half-time lead.
There was no let for the home side in the second-half as the superb Rangi Chase produced another stunning pass for Dixon to send Clare over in the corner.
On 58 minutes, Charnley managed to cross in the corner for his 23rd try of the season – equalling teammate Sam Tomkins’ record.
The kick was unsuccessful but Cas ended any hopes of a comeback when Dixon slotted over a penalty to complete a fine victory.
The Warriors only had four days between matches but Wane refused to use their quick turnaround as an excuse for his side’s disappointing display.
“We lacked a bit of energy,” he added. “If that is because of last Monday, then I expect us to get over that.
“We are better than that and it will never be used as an excuse. I still expect us to perform.”
