Behind the scenes at Manchester United will continue to be a different place next season after first-team coach Rene Meulensteen left the Premier League champions.
The 49-year-old Dutchman took up the role at Old Trafford in 2007 after having his coaching contract at Danish club Brondby cancelled.
And after being released by the Red Devils, Meulensteen paid tribute to the whole club and particularly his ex-boss – Sir Alex Ferguson.
“I wish everyone at this great football club all the best,” he told United’s official website.
“I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, all colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special and one I will never forget.”
Meulensteen often took sessions himself while 71-year-old Ferguson observed from the touchline at United’s Carrington training ground.
But with new boss David Moyes due to start his new role as United manager on July 1, Meulensteen’s departure is another of Ferguson’s backroom staff to be moved on.
Assistant manager Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have already left, with Moyes likely to bring assistant Steve Round and first-team coach Jimmy Lumsden from Everton.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also thanked Meulensteen for his contribution to the club and wished him well for the future.
“He has given great assistance to Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in keeping the team at the top of the game not only in this country but in Europe as well,” he said.
