Keep calm and carry on: Ex-Manchester United defender Gerard Pique urges Thiago to stay patient at Barcelona

By Alex Bysouth

Former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has urged Thiago Alcantara to follow in the footsteps of Barcelona legend Xavi and wait patiently for first team football.

Thiago, who scored a hat-trick as Spain under 21s beat Italy in the European Championship final last night, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

But Pique, who returned to the Camp Nou from United in 2008, believes the Italian-born midfielder is a key part of Spain and Barcelona’s future.

“There is a possibility that he could leave but we have to convince him that the best place for him is Barcelona,” he told Spanish radio.

“Players in his position like Xavi were patient and they ended up defining an era.

“When you watch them and see how superior they have been in this tournament you realise that the future is very positive.”

The 26-year-old World Cup and European Championship winner confessed, as well as keeping Thiago, the Catalan giants need to add defensive reinforcements this summer.

“I understand why Barcelona want to strengthen in the centre-back position because last season we suffered a lot from injuries,” Pique added.

“All the names that have been linked with the club are very good players and we will welcome any new arrival.

“But I think we should remember we still have Puyol and if he starts to get fit again he will still be among the top five centre-backs in the world.”
