After just two goals in 40 games last campaign, Danny Welbeck has blamed for his poor Manchester United return on being played out of position.
The 22-year-old only found the net against Stoke City and Real Madrid for United, but bagged three times while on international duty with England.
But the youngster, who featured mostly in a wide position under Sir Alex Ferguson, admits it is up to him to reproduce his Three Lions form in a Red Devils shirt.
“I’ve played up front for England, been away to tournaments and scored goals there,” he said. “I know once I get into those positions I will put the chances away.
“Overall, there have been improvements to my game and I have been more consistent but I’ve been playing on the wing, which has inhibited my ability to get into goalscoring positions.”
However, Welbeck’s competition in the shape of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez were all prolific in front of goal and England international is happy to help the team in any way he can.
“I’m also aware that knowing how to play in different positions and developing in different areas of the pitch will only benefit me and the teams I play for,” he added.
“I’m happy to help the team out and it doesn’t really matter whether I’m playing on the wing or up front – I should have had a much better goal return.”
