Incoming Manchester United boss David Moyes is set to make his first scoop in the transfer market – for Uruguayan starlet Guillermo Varela.
After a successful two-week trial at the Red Devils last month, Penarol are resigned to letting the 20-year-old leave for an initial fee of £1.5m.
Varela – who fans should expect to see strut his stuff at the U-20 World Cup in two weeks’ time – was upbeat following his trial at the Premier League champions.
“I have trained with the first-team,” he said last month. “I am very happy and I was received very well.
“It was a surprise to get the chance to have a trial with Manchester United.
“I’m glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel.”
The youngster will not only face a battle with Rafael for the right-back spot but also the Brazilian’s twin brother, Fabio, who has returned from a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.
