Rio Ferdinand is one of Manchester United’s greatest ever centre halves, according to outgoing boss, and the man who signed him, Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former West Ham and Leeds United man was granted a testimonial against Sevilla at Old Trafford on August 9, marking a significant test in David Moyes’ preparations for next season.
But Ferguson, who retired after sealing United’s 13th Premier League title, believes the former England defender’s abilities are worthy of the celebration.
“He is one of the best central defenders this club has seen,” said Ferguson.
“It is great that the club are granting Rio a testimonial for his services to the club.
“Rio has a natural ability to read the game and I said last month that I believed that this season has been the best of his Manchester United career.
“It will be a fantastic night for him and the fans, but it also gets next season’s campaign off to a great start.”
Ferdinand, who joined United from Leeds for a British-record £30million fee in 2002, recently signed a one-year extension to see in the new era under Moyes.
And the 34-year-old admitted his delight at being able to celebrate spending the majority of his career at Old Trafford.
“This is going to be a big night for me as well as an emotional one,” said Ferdinand.
“I cannot believe where those ten years have gone and I am lucky to have spent them here at Manchester United.
“This club is unique in every way, the history and drive of the place is unbelievable, it spurs everyone to succeed.
“The fans are the best in the world, their commitment is amazing and I have appreciated their support throughout my career. I hope they enjoy the night as much as I intend to.”
Ferdinand has made 432 appearances for United in all competitions, winning six Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.
