Shaw thing: Manchester United boss David Moyes keen on Saints’ Luke in bid to replicate Fergie’s youth focus

By Alex Bysouth

New Manchester United boss David Moyes appears to be intent on lining his squad with young, British talent in a bid to replicate the success of predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson put his faith in youth during his time at United and introduced the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham to the Premier League.

Moyes has been linked with moves for promising Southampton full back Luke Shaw and Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, after the 19-year old impressed the Scot during his time at Goodison Park.

While Moyes seems to be the only one in the running for Barkley the Red Devils boss may, however, have to fend off Chelsea’s advances for 17-year-old Shaw, a self-confessed boyhood Blues fan.

The left back had a dream debut season with Southampton and his potential was recognised by Moyes while in charge at Everton, but is attracting the attention of England’s other top clubs.

Ferguson was continuously linked with Toffees’ left back Leighton Baines as a replacement for France international Patrice Evra, but with the emergence of youngster Shaw, Moyes could find a long-term solution.

Shaw announced his intention to stay at St Mary’s, believing he has more chance of first team football, but is not due to sign a professional contract at Southampton until he turns 18 in July.

One player Moyes will be banking on next season is forward Robin van Persie, who was awarded the Barclays Golden Boot for the second year running after netting 26 times in his debut United season.

Van Persie also collected the trophy last year for Arsenal, where he scored 30 times, and fended off Premier League rivals Luis Suarez, 23 goals, and Gareth Bale, 21 goals, to collect the 2012/13 crown.
