Shaun Wane hailed Wigan Warriors’ determination as his side commanded the second half against Hull Kingston Rovers to progress in the Challenge Cup.
But the Warriors had to overcome a red hot start from their opponents who led for half an hour through a second-minute David Hodgson try to eventually win 46-14.
Wigan stand-off Blake Green was an eighth-minute casualty after being floored by Cory Paterson and Wane says Wigan having to adjust made the win his best yet.
“Because of what we had to overcome this was my most satisfying win since 2010,” said Wane.
“I thought to overcome what they threw at us was fantastic. They played with a lot of determination.
“It was an old-fashioned cup tie I thought. It was a real tough battle and I’m impressed with every player.
“We had a real dig and have consistency in our attacking play so I’m very happy today.”
Man of Steel Sam Tomkins came-up with two tries in the final five minutes of the first half to put Wigan in front before they opened fire with six second-half four pointers.
Tomkins added another two with Pat Richards, Josh Charnley and Iain Thornley all contributing to the scoresheet to ensure Wigan’s cup campaign stayed intact.
Craig Hall replied twice for the home side, sandwiching a Liam Farrell score for Wigan in the final ten minutes.
“It was obvious their game plan was to disrupt our game plan and that makes this a more satisfying win,” said Wane.
“I thought we showed some real guts and determination to come through that and to stick with what we know. We’ve come up with an impressive win.”
Despite his satisfaction with the result, Wane was angry at the manner in which Green was knocked-out.
“It’s shocking – he’s in a bad way,” said Wane.
“When he was knocked unconscious he also damaged his ankle on the way down.”
Wane also admitted he wants to win the cup after Wigan Athletic’s Wembley success.
“It would be fantastic for our little town,” he added.
