Brian Noble Salford City Reds’ debut boosted by long-term deals for Martin Gleeson and Shannan McPherson

By Matt Simpson

Salford City Reds have been boosted ahead of their basement battle with Castleford Tigers by tying down Martin Gleeson and Shannan McPherson to longer-term contracts.

Brian Noble takes charge of the Reds for the first time after being announced as Phil Veivers’ permanent successor, with the immediate task of guiding the club up the Super League.

But it is the long-term plan for Salford which enticed both players to sign contract extensions, with Martin Gleeson especially excited about the club’s potential.

“I am very happy at Salford and really feel this is the place to be because of what is likely to happen here in the next few years,” he told Sky Sports.

“The club has so much potential and I am enjoying my rugby.”

The 32-year-old centre looks set to see out his playing days at the Reds, with the extension running until the summer of 2015 – the same given to Australian McPherson.

Both players are seen as key components in Salford’s revival and were praised by chief executive Ed Farish – currently in talks to keep Jodie Broughton after reported interest from St Helens.

“Martin is the ultimate professional and we are delighted he has decided to extend his stay with us,” he said.

“He is a top player with a wealth of experience and this is a big boost for us. Martin has brought so much to the team with his experience.

“His performances this season have been very impressive.

“Shannan had a good reputation in Australia as a solid player. He is a good, honest forward and he is another very experienced player with a lot to offer us.”
