‘We are better’: Manchester City’s Aleksandar Kolarov issues rallying cry ahead of Old Trafford derby

By Paddy von Behr

Aleksandar Kolarov has claimed Manchester City are a better team than rivals United ahead of this weekend’s derby, despite the Red Devils topping the league.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have gone 15 points clear in this season’s Premier League title race and should regain the trophy from City.

Kolarov admitted United have been better this campaign, but remains convinced Roberto Mancini’s side are better that Ferguson’s.

“They are confident in this moment and it will be a different game,” the 27-year-old told Sky Sports.

“But if we play like we know, if we are all at 100 per cent – I think we are better than them.

“I have to be honest, they have been better this season.

“We have played good, but some games we have made mistakes. Against small teams, we have made a lot of mistakes – away especially.”

United’s lead at the top of the table has increased steadily since the turn of the year and they are now odds-on favourites to claim the title.

City manager Mancini has conceded the league is out of their reach, but they remain focussed on regaining the FA Cup.

However, Kolarov is eager to ensure City assert some dominance by triumphing in Monday night’s derby.

“They deserve it because they are in first place at the moment,” he said.

“But, for us, that doesn’t change anything. We are going to try and win in the game at Old Trafford, to be proud.”

An FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea follows Monday’s derby, which Mancini’s side will be desperate to win and seek some silverware in a disappointing season.
