‘Everyone wants in’: Selection headache for Sir Alex as Manchester derby touted as ‘biggest game’ in English football

Every player at Manchester United is desperate for a place in Monday’s derby clash with City – being touted as the biggest game in English football.

The squad selection is providing a headache for Sir Alex Ferguson, who claims this is the game everyone wants to be involved in.

The veteran manager is facing some tough decisions in who will make the derby team, with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck all as strong attacking options.

“These are the games that everyone wants to be involved in, the derby games,” Sir Alex told Inside United.

Meanwhile Manchester City defender Kolo Toure ranked the game as the most important in English football.

“Back when I was playing in North London derbies, it was only Arsenal and Manchester United fighting for the title,” he told The Sun.

“That was the biggest competition but today it’s more like City and United.”

And Sir Alex only backed up Toure’s claims – explaining the rise in importance of the derby clashes in recent years.

“Over the last few years the derby games have been far more important than they ever were, so we’ve all been looking forward to them. But we’ve had a heavy programme leading up to the game so we just have to manage it.”
