FIFA chief Sepp Blatter left ‘amazed’ by ‘exceptional’ Ryan Giggs as veteran winger prepares for 1,000th game

FIFA President Sepp Blatter believes ‘exceptional’ one-club Manchester United man Ryan Giggs is an example for others to follow as the Welshman clocks his 1000th game against Norwich today.

It will be a weekend of celebration for Giggs after signing a fresh one-year contract with United, guaranteeing he will be playing for the Red Devils into his 40s.

And Blatter – who is in Edinburgh ahead of the International Football Association Board’s annual meeting – is left amazed by the 39-year-old’s dedication to one team.

“I think it is amazing, exceptional,” Blatter told Sky Sports.  “It is really something that I as a football man have difficulty in believing.

“Not just to play 1,000 matches, but that most of them have been for Manchester United.

“This is great – you should play for a club with all your heart and not go from one to another.”

Giggs has played 931 games for United, complimented by a 16-year international career and four appearances in Team GB’s colours at London 2012.

The midfield maestro never graced a major international tournament after retiring from Wales duty in 2007 – but Blatter believes playing Olympic football was a fitting tribute.

“I think the Olympic Games were a kind of reward from the Great Britain selection committee,” explained Blatter.

“It is like a smaller World Cup. I think it was great for him to have done it.

“But I can only say congratulations Ryan – you are great, you are really great.

“I can only bow and play compliments, and I hope you not only enjoy your game but also your life.”
