A fraudster scammed more than £2,000 from Trafford Council over four years after dishonestly claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit after his son moved out.
David Cole, 37, of Chepstow Avenue, Sale, was convicted of dishonestly obtaining £2,429.35 last week after failing to report a change in living circumstances from January 2008 up until February 2012.
Cole pleaded guilty to the benefit fraud and was sentenced at Trafford Magistrates Court to a four-month Community Order on Friday September 20.
He was ordered to repay all the benefits that he illegally obtained back to the council with an additionally £300.
Executive Councillor Sean Anstee said: “This re-enforces the importance of people informing the council of changes to their circumstances.”
Council Counter Fraud Officers who took an interest in Mr Cole after the Greater Manchester Police found a cannabis farm in his previous address on Albion Street, Sale, an offence which he was convicted earlier this year.
Mr Anstee added: “Benefit fraud will not be tolerated and Trafford Council will prosecute anyone found to be fraudently claiming benefits.”
