Footage of a gang armed with sledgehammers who attempted to rob a Manchester jewellers on Thursday in front of terrified onlookers has been released.
The incident occurred at around 2.25pm in the city centre when robbers tried to smash through the front windows of the store on King Street West with a sledgehammer.
The staff then activated the emergency equipment and smoke was released. The offenders then fled empty handed in a blue Mitsubishi.
Images of the sledgehammer used in the attack, which was left at the scene, has also been released in the hope that any retailers may recognise the price markings on it.
Detective Constable Adam Cronshaw said: “This was a terrifying experience for the passersby and members of staff, although they were quick enough to raise the alarm.
“We have launched a thorough investigation into this incident and appeal to any information to come forward.”
