A violent thief was jailed yesterday after forcing an elderly woman to the floor and robbing her of her pension in Manchester last month.
Daniel Garvey, 23, of no fixed address, was sentenced yesterday at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square to three years and four months in prison after the attack last month.
On Monday August 19, Garvey followed his elderly victim through Eccles town centre as she picked up her pension and paid her bills before he violently forced her to the ground.
The woman sustained injuries to both her shoulder and wrist. As she looked up she saw Garvey running away with her shopping bag.
Detective Constable Steven Robinson said: “Garvey deliberately targeted his 74 year old victim because of her age.
“Garvey followed her while she did her shopping before grabbing her bag so hard it forced her forward and injured her shoulder and wrist.
“She thought she could go about her daily business without having her handbag stolen.”
On the morning of the attack, the victim arrived at the post office to collect her pension and pay in some bills.
Garvey was seen on CCTV footage following the pensioner as she left the post office and went into a newsagents. He waited in a pawn brokers nearby until the woman left.
He continued to follow her across Peel Street and onto Lower Monton Road where he violently snatched the victim’s bag and left her injured on the ground.
The pink shopping bag was later recovered in a wheelie bin a short distance away.
DC Robinson added: “Garvey has left his victim very shaken by the incident and I hope today’s sentence will provide some comfort to her knowing justice has been done.”
