Grandmother forced to flee Middleton home with ‘terrified’ child, 3, after late night arson attack

By Amelia Shaw

A 42-year-old woman and her granddaughter were forced to flee their Middleton home after a late night arson attack last week.

The grandmother was woken at around 11pm on August 22 by the sounds of her smoke alarm and found that her house on Great Arbor Way was alight.

She grabbed the 3-year-old child, ran downstairs past the fire and left through the back door of the house.

Detective Sergeant Diane Johnson said: “This was a terrifying experience for this woman, who woke to find herself in immediate danger. She has no idea why this happened.”

Those responsible started the fire through the letterbox, which then set the curtains alight – the blaze was successfully extinguished by neighbours following the pair’s escape.

Both occupants were taken to hospital to treat smoke inhalation but escaped with no serious injuries.

DS Diane Johnson added: “Nobody we have spoken to saw the offenders so we are appealing for any possible witnesses to come forward.

“We have launched a thorough investigation to find those responsible.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8782 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
