Two pints of lager and a pedicure? Beloved Salford pub offers free beauty and weight loss courses

By Steven Brown

A beloved Irlam pub will replace pints with pedicures as it opens its doors to offer free beauty and weigh loss courses from September.

The Tiger Moth pub, in Swallow Drive was a major supporting influence after a major gas explosion in 2010, which destroyed three homes and injured 15 people.

The suburban area within the City of Salford, Greater Manchester, will be home to two free courses, commencing and continuing over the next year.

Councillor Margaret Morris, assistant mayor for health and well-being, said: “The Tiger Moth is at the heart of the community and is a welcoming, central location, so where better to offer courses?”

The beauty course is designed to target all aspects of hand, skin and nail care, and with added extras of how to feel beautiful from the inside.

Also available for residents is Weight Warriors, is a ten-week course which aims to help health improvement in time for Christmas.

Having these new beauty regimes in a pub is a unique and striking difference to other beauty and health courses available.

The fact that the pub was a key figure during the gas explosion makes it a perfect place to relax and revamp in time for Christmas.

Councillor Morris added: “People can improve their health with simple lifestyle changes – eating well, exercising regularly, drinking alcohol in moderation and quitting smoking and these courses are all about getting that message across in a fun and friendly way.”

The atmosphere from the community-adored pub will surely create a fantastic and energetic ambiance for those taking part in the courses.

Both classes are run by the Irlam and Cadishead team at Salford City Council’s health improvement service.

From healthy eating and physical exercise to responsible drinking and quitting smoking, these courses cover all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle.

Weight Warriors starts on August 30 and runs every Friday from 10am to 11.30am.

Those beauty fanatics out there will have a wait a little bit longer, with the beauty course starting on September 19, running every Thursday from 9.30am to 12 noon.

For those who are not interested in health or beauty, there will be information on courses to help job seekers, run by the health improvement team.

These extra courses will look at writing CV’s, interview skills and develop a good attitude towards job hunting.

As well as this, there will also be a course to introduce the idea of working in a school, which will be both engaging and interesting for all who participate.
