What would you leave for a loved one? Solicitors across Manchester offer free wills in return for Christie donation

By Amelia Goswell

As more than half of adults in the UK do not leave a will for their loved ones, people across Manchester will have the opportunity to make or update theirs for free next month as part of The Christie’s Make a Will Week.

From September 16, solicitors throughout the region will waive their usual fees which can cost anything up to £150 in return for a donation to The Christie, the specialist cancer centre in Manchester.

Around 58% of adults in the UK do not have a will, leaving them with no control over how their belongings and assets will be passed on and their loved ones may also pay more inheritance tax than they need to.

Christina Clare, legacy and research officer at The Christie Charity, said: “Make a Will Week is extremely important to us and money raised goes to the very heart of what we do for our patients.

“We’re hoping to exceed all previous targets so I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to get involved.  You’ll not only ensure your loved ones are looked after and that your wishes are known and will be met, but you’ll also help cancer patients far and wide.”

Make a Will Week is now in its fourth year and is firmly established in The Christie Charity’s calendar, having raised over £35,000 to date.

This money makes a huge difference to cancer patients, helping to fund research, treatment and extra support services.

Ms Clare added: “Over 65 solicitors are kindly taking part in this year’s Make a Will Week and we’re extremely grateful for them giving up their time and money for this important cause.”

Nicola Finbow of Temperley Taylor solicitors said: “We are very pleased to be taking part in Make A Will Week for the third year.

“The Christie is incredibly important to people in our local area and we are happy to support the work they do for cancer patients and their families.”

The week intends to highlight how it is never too early to make a will and that any life changes such as marriage, having children, buying a house or retiring are all good times to update your will.

Solicitors will offer a free, standard will writing and updating service on the understanding that clients will make a donation and perhaps consider including a gift in their will to The Christie Charity.

Ms Clare said: “The suggested minimum donation is £100 for a basic single will or £150 for a pair of basic mirror wills which are ideal for couples as the wills reflect each other almost identically.”
