Attacker armed with meat cleaver and gas canister barricaded himself and woman in Gorton house – arrest made

By Marios Papaloizou

A man armed with a meat cleaver and a gas canister barricaded himself and a woman in a house in Gorton – and now police have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

Just before 8.30pm someone was seen attacking a man and then ran into a house on Western Street.

Police were called and when they arrived on the scene the attacker had barricaded himself inside the house.

Nearby homes were evacuated and force negotiators were called to calm the man down after flames were seen in the kitchen and information was received that there was a gas canister in the house.

Police forced their way into the property, rescued the woman, and extinguished the fire.

A 30-year-old has now been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

Superintendent Vanessa Jardine from North Manchester Division said: “The man was armed with a meat cleaver, there was a fire and there was an oxygen cylinder inside the property, clearly meaning there was danger to those within and outside the house.

“It is likely this incident would have caused a lot of concern within the local community as the emergency services were at the scene well into the early hours of the morning.”

The man has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and Supt Jardine praised the work of those on site.

“I would like to take this opportunity to praise the work of the emergency services and Transco who were in attendance most of the night and morning to ensure the incident was resolved and no one was seriously hurt,” she said.
