Armed police arrest wanted fugitive Michael Cope in Leigh over murder of Salford mum-of-two Linzi Ashton

By David Keane

Wanted fugitive Michael Cope was arrested by armed police in Leigh, Wigan, last night – after almost a month on the run.

Officers pounced on an address on Larch Road at around midnight after receiving intelligence that Cope was there.

The 28-year-old came out of the house, handed himself in to police and is currently being quizzed by detectives.

Cope was wanted in connection with the murder of Salford mum-of-two Linzi Ashton, who was found brutally murdered in her own home by relative on June 29.

Post mortem results showed she had died as a result suffered pressure to the neck after being savagely beaten.

Detective Superintendent Tony Creely said: “Since Linzi was killed nearly a month ago there has been an intensive manhunt to find and arrest her killer safely.”

It is understood that Cope is not thought to have been at the address for the last four months.

“Over recent weeks we have received a very positive response from the public, and we thank the people of Salford, Hindley and Leigh for their cooperation and support,” DS Creely said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5092 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
