Reward for fugitive murder suspect Michael Cope raised to £25,000, as police fear he is armed and dangerous

By Glen Keogh

There is now a £25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of fugitive murder suspect Michael Cope – who may now have access to a firearm, police say.

Cope, 28, is being hunted over the murder of mother-of-two Linzi Ashton, who was found dead at her home on Westbourne Road, Winton, shortly before 6pm on Saturday June 29.

She was found with multiple injuries and died as a result of pressure to the neck.

The reward to catch dangerous Cope was initially £5,000, and officers have now added £20,000 to the fund as time passes without sight of the suspected killer.

False rumours surfaced yesterday afternoon that Cope had been found hanged in Eccles – but it soon turned out these were unsubstantiated.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan said: “It has now been almost ten days since Linzi’s murder and it is vital we find and speak to Michael Cope to assist our investigation.

“Understandably, her family are absolutely shattered by what has happened to her, and we are committed to giving them the answers that they need.

“We hope that the increase in the reward will encourage people who may not have felt able to come forward beforehand to approach us now.”

Police have also revealed that Cope may be using Greater Manchester’s canal system to travel – specifically between Winton and Leigh.

He is also said to have a good knowledge of the pathways around the Bridgewater Canal and the surrounding areas.

Chief Supt Mulligan added: “While our appeal to the public continues, we would also like to make it clear that Cope is dangerous and should not be approached.

“We do not want the public to be overly alarmed, but we have had some information which suggests that Cope has access to a firearm.

“I want to reassure the community that we still have a significant police presence in the area which is supported by armed officers.

“A dedicated team of detectives are continuing their enquiries to locate Cope.”

Two men have already been charged and one man arrested in connection with the investigation.

David Sargeson, 26, of Sarah Street, Eccles has been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Craig Blackburn, 25, of Ivy Street, Eccles has been charged with assisting an offender.

A 27-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been bailed until 15 August 2013 pending further enquiries.
