Footballing giants Manchester United and City are putting their heated rivarly to one side for an evening – to raise money for cancer sufferers.
The city’s two biggest clubs are teaming up this autumn to raise money for The Christie’s annual charity ball to help support cancer sufferers.
Football, rugby and cricket legends will unite on October 29 at The Point to raise money for the specialist cancer centre.
Salford City Reds Rugby League Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club will also be supporting the Ball, with journalist and Daybreak presenter John Stapleton hosting the event.
Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, four course meal and entertainment by a UK comedian and music from a number one selling UK artist.
Former England and Manchester United captain Bryan Robson, ex-Great Britain Lions Rugby League player Alan Hunte from Salford City Reds, and Lancashire’s famous wicket keeper Warren Hegg are also expected to attend.
The charity event was the idea of Manchester City legend Mike Summerbee, who has suffered from prostate cancer.
The ex-Manchester City and England football star said: “I have always been a supporter of The Christie and have been to many fundraising events and dinners but this one is particularly special because I cannot think of another occasion when all of Manchester’s major sporting teams have joined forces in this way.
“The research at The Christie is vital for the people of Manchester, so I am delighted this event will help in some way.”
Former player and current coach at Salford City Reds Alan Hunte, said; “I am fortunate that my family has no personal experience of The Christie, but being in sport we often come across patients who have been touched by cancer when we have visited.
“It is a pleasure to be able to support this event because the research which takes place in Manchester is vital for everyone.”
Bryan Robson, the club ambassador for Manchester United was previously diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011 expressed his admiration for the cancer centre.
“It is no secret that recently I have had personal experience of cancer treatment, so a cause like this is obviously very dear to my heart,” he said.
“The Christie is an amazing facility for the people of Manchester and beyond, so I am delighted that us sporting types can all join together and do a little something to help.”
