MPs have welcomed a ‘much needed change of leadership’ as a long-serving Tameside NHS Chief Executive stepped down this week.
Christine Green, who had held her position for 15 years, left her role amid increasing pressure from MPs and further speculation about the standard of care available at Tameside NHS Foundation Trust.
The hospital is currently under review by Sir Bruce Keogh, who is looking into 14 hospitals noted as having high death rates.
The resignation of medical director Tariq Mahmood was also announced yesterday with MPs previously describing Ms Green as ‘presiding over a failing culture’.
MPs Andrew Gwynne, Jonathan Reynolds and David Heyes celebrated the resignation, and said: “We would welcome the departure of Chief Executive Christine Green and Medical Director Tariq Mahmood from their positions at Tameside Hospital.
“We have all said on numerous occasions that Tameside Hospital needs a change of leadership – we are glad that change finally appears to be under way.”
Ms Green, whose resignation was agreed on June 27, said: “I’ve been at Tameside for 15 years as Chief Executive. It’s never been an easy ride.
“The new hospital is now over two years old and that journey has taken us from a hospital that many said should be closed down to a hospital with a vibrant long-term future to which everyone is committed.”
Tameside Trust Chair Paul Connellan thanked Ms Green for her many years of dedicated service at the Trust and is happy to welcome a new eagerly awaited Chief Executive.
“At this time Christine and the Board felt it would be appropriate for her to let someone else lead the Trust as it faces the future challenges that exists across the whole of the NHS,” he said.
