A young woman has been left ‘traumatised’ after a dog mauled her 18-month-old toy Yorkshire Terrier to death in broad daylight in Spinningfields last month.
Police have described the incident as ‘tragic’, after the dog named Daisy was brutally attacked on May 6 near Oast House at around 4:45pm.
A photograph of the other dog and its owner has since been released by police.
Daisy was enjoying a sunny Bank Holiday Monday afternoon with owner Stephanie Hopwood, 24, from Sandbach, when she was suddenly attacked by the other dog.
The dog was not on a lead and inflicted fatal injuries on Daisy, who had to be put to sleep later that day.
Owner Stephanie managed to get the photograph of the other dog, believed to be an Akita-type breed, and its owner.
After the attack, the owner put his dog back on a lead and they walked towards in Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, towards Bridge Street.
PC Gavin Johnson, based at Bootle Street Police Station, said police have spoken to a number of witnesses and are working to identify the owner.
“I have absolutely no doubt that anyone who saw this would have been horrified and, no doubt, the image would have stayed with them,” he said.
“This poor dog was mauled to death in front of both the owner and shocked onlookers.
“As tragic as Daisy’s demise is, what troubles us even more is how would this dog react to other dogs or even small children?”
PC Johnson urged anyone who saw the attack, or anyone who recognises the man and dog in picture, to get in touch.
