‘We do not want to be killjoys!’ Police urge festival-goers to enjoy Parklife Weekender… responsibly

With the Parklife Weekender taking place this weekend, as well as Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi performing in the city, police are preparing for a major weekend of music in Manchester.

The likes of Plan B, Example and Johnny Marr will play at Heaton Park over Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, with tens of thousands expected to turn out for the north Manchester festival.

Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry said officers have been working very closely with the council and organisers to ensure that revellers are safe and enjoy their weekend.

“We do not want to be killjoys and our aim is to see everyone go home with a smile on their faces,” he said.

“I would ask everyone to drink responsibly and behave in an appropriate manner.

“Anyone causing trouble or seen to be taking drugs, will be dealt with by police accordingly.”

Stone Roses fan Christopher Brahney died after seeing the band at Heaton Park in June last year.

The cause of the 22-year-old’s death was inconclusive even after a post-mortem examination, but put the spotlight on music festivals and drug use.

Supt Chaudhry added: “I would also ask fans to plan their journey well in advance and leave themselves plenty of time to get to the venue. Please park sensibly, be aware of your surroundings and keep yourself and valuables safe.

“Overall, I hope everyone enjoys themselves and the Parklife Weekender is another example of how the city of Manchester loves music.”
