A Bolton woman was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
Sheri Torkington, 32, collided with a Ford Focus when she sped through a red light in her Ford Fiesta shortly before 3.25am on June 29, 2011, causing the death of 42-year-old Laura Farrell.
Chief Inspector Rachel Buckle, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, condemned Torkington for subjecting Mrs Farrell’s family to a lengthy trial and stressed the importance of obeying traffic laws.
“This woman had her life tragically cut short because of the actions of Sheri Torkington,” she said.
“At no point did she admit her guilt and subjected the victim’s family to a lengthy trial. Torkington disregarded the law and drove at speed through a red light.
“Even a split second of carelessness can have devastating consequences – the road traffic laws are in place for a reason.
“Torkington has been sentenced, but she has to live with what she has done for the rest of her life.”
The collision occurred at the junction of Topp Way and Turton Street with Mrs Farrell’s Ford Focus being pushed through the railings.
Mrs Farrell was taken to hospital where she later died while her husband also sustained serious long-term injuries in the collision.
