Police calm public concerns over investigation into Ashton-under-Lyne knife attack

By Matt Simpson

Police chiefs in Tameside have moved to allay public fears after forensic examinations into a knife attack in Ashton-under-Lyne caused concern.

A 30-year-old man, assaulted at an address on Union Street on Wednesday evening, was taken to hospital where he is still receiving treatment for a knife wound in his arm.

But officers investigating the case say the man is believed to have made his way to Market Square before going to hospital, which Superintendent Neil Evans explained was the reason behind police activity there.

We understand the scene and police activity at the Market Square yesterday may have caused some concern in the community,” he said.

“This was not the scene of the alleged assault but we did need to carry out a forensic examination there, which people will have noticed.

“The incident, which we do not believe was a random attack, took place within a nearby house.”

A 35-year-old man and two 20-year-old women have been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attack and remain in police custody for questioning.

GMP’s enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information regarding the assault is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
