There’s an argument to suggest that the UK is in a new golden era for game shows, with the British public seemingly unable to get enough of the format.
There are plenty of plans for new offerings, with many of these coming out of Manchester.
The latest offering is Wisdom of the Crowd, which has all the elements needed to make it a serious crowd-pleaser.
The question is, can it contend with the well-established big guns?
Can New Series Contend With British Giants?
The popularity of the game show market in the UK has been helped massively by some huge shows over the years, with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Deal or No Deal arguably the two greatest of all time.
The fact that these shows branched out into sprawling franchises helped the game show boom massively.
Moving into the iGaming market was crucial for these shows.
In the eclectic mix of Betfair online slot games, the Deal or No Deal Megaways and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire slot games stand out thanks to their iconic branding.
They are instantly recognisable to fans of the show, and they serve to spark interest in the series among slot players.
Along with these slots, there are loads of other spinoffs of the game shows, such as mobile quiz apps.
For a new game show to even have a look-in at competing with these British giants, it would need to explore ideas about franchise expansion as well.
The iGaming market represents a solid place to start, but it’s also wise to expand a game show franchise into other merchandise such as tabletop games.
Wisdom of the Crowd Filmed in Greater Manchester
According to a recent report from the British Comedy Guide, John Bishop hosted the pilot of the BBC’s new entry to the game show market.
The aim of the game is to make educated guesses about things, such as how many sweets are in a jar.
The simple format could easily tap into the same viewers who enjoy Deal or No Deal, which requires zero knowledge to enjoy.
The pilot episode was filmed at Dock 10, MediaCity UK in Salford earlier this year, but a full series hasn’t yet been confirmed.
It was made Magnum Media, who already have a hit show in The 1% Club on ITV.
Therefore, there’s a good chance that it could go on to be a hit.
It could be argued that the UK is currently in or heading into a new golden era for game shows.
Both Deal or No Deal and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire have enjoyed immense success since their respective revivals, and there’s talk of bringing back other classic shows in the genre.
It’s too early to say whether Wisdom of the Crowd could go on to become a British classic.
However, if it does get commissioned, it has a great chance of success.
With a hugely popular name fronting the series and a simple format, it’s got all the makings of a hit.
