What are the 2025 World Indoor Athletics Championships?

The World Athletics Indoor Championships are a biennial indoor track and field competition which serve as the global championship for that version of the sport.

The Indoor Championships comprise 26 events and there are 176 athletes from 127 nations participating.

The 20th World Athletics Indoor Championships start today, March 21, and end on Sunday, March 23 in Nanjing in China.

The facility, a brand new purpose-built gymnasium at Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park, known as Nanjing’s Cube, will be the centrepiece of this year’s event.

Nanjing was originally due to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2020, then in 2021 and again in 2023.

But unfortunately all these dates were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic regulations in China.

The 2022 edition took place in Belgrade in Serbia, and the 2024 edition in Glasgow.

Georgia Hunter Bell – coached by Wigan’s own Trevor Hunter and Jennie Meadows – is leading Great Britain’s medal hopes in China.

Husband-and-wife coaching team Hunter and Meadows won the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach of the Year Award.

Keely Hodgkinson – who is also in their stable of athletes – won the main award on that night in December too.
