Miami Crispy: Chorlton takeaway fate to be decided at public inquiry

A popular Manchester chicken shop has appealed to the council after they were forced to close indefinitely.

A public inquiry into the closure of viral sensation, Miami Crispy – which opened its Chorlton branch in March 2024 – will be held at 10am on February 4 in the Mechanics Conference Centre.

According to gov.uk, in 90% of validated cases it is expected the Inspector – appointed by Angela Rayner – will issue their decision within 24 weeks of the appeal being made.

Miami Crispy told fans, who travel miles just to taste the TikTok famous spicy chicken burger, it hopes to reopen its south Manchester location “soon”.

Local resident Gemma Rose Pugh said: “Chorlton has changed.

“In my opinion, if this shop was opened in another not so wealthy area, with the same complaints, it wouldn’t have been closed.”

This comes after a second Stop Notice was issued to the Chorlton premises on 23 August 2024, following several complaints from people living near the well-known chicken shop.

According to Manchester City Council, despite engaging with the owners, the business failed to apply for planning permission to operate as a takeaway – nor did it give assurances it will not operate in this way.

Just months after opening, citizens were notified it would be a criminal offence for Miami Crispy to operate as a hot food takeaway on Manchester Road.

Attempts to remedy the situation were made last summer – it adopted an eat-in policy, until forcibly closed in August.

The Burnage branch is open as usual and it has since opened a shop in Ilford, London.

The area is home to several eateries and a thriving community spirit, residents commented on Miami Crispy’s impact on the atmosphere in Chorlton.

Opinions were mixed among locals, some expressed they were “glad” it’s shut, while others suggested ways the council could improve things.

Social media users criticised the chicken shop for customers littering in the area, they shared photos of rubbish – with the Miami Crispy logo – dumped outside their homes.

Members of Facebook group, Chorlton M21 said antisocial behaviour “ruined it for everyone else” – many blamed customers, who come from all over, for the closure.

Residents complained of “double parking” and inconsiderate drivers, they also suggested bigger bins with more frequent collections would reduce most of the problems.

Some Mancunians hoped the popular chicken shop would return, citing “snobbery” as reason for the backlash – suggesting there would be “no issue” if it was a vegan establishment.

One Instagram user commented on a post by @citylifemanchester about the closure: “Omg Chorlton needs this minus the litter.

“But best burgers for £6 can’t go wrong.

“Hopefully back up running soon.”

Chorlton entrepreneur Paul Preston, said: “The food is good value and a superb business.”

“I like successful small businesses who offer great value for money, like Miami, and this kind of success helps other local business.

“The council should be providing more local bins to cater for the litter and parking should be organised better.

“We do not want to see the local business in Chorlton struggle.

“We should support them and help them grow.”

A spokesperson for Miami Crispy told Manchester Evening News: “Before purchasing the business, we confirmed that there was a Certificate of Lawful Use for a takeaway for this property.

“Unfortunately, due to a change in planning law we have been informed by the council that this is not the case and therefore we will be operating from this site as an eat in restaurant.

“We are a family who have lived in Chorlton since the 1960s and have worked closely with our local residents and will continue to do so.”
