Green pledge scrapped: The then-Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer insisted he had no choice but to ditch his £28 billion a year green investment pledge. He defended the U-turn by claiming it was no longer affordable because the Tories had crashed the economy.

McConnell steps down: Mitch McConnell announced he was stepping down as Senate leader in November, as the longest-serving Senate leader in US history. Senate republicans would elect John Thune as their new leader, replacing McConnell.

Liverpool win cup: The Reds won a record-breaking tenth League Cup at Wembley after beating Chelsea 1-0 after extra-time. Virgil van Dijk headed Kostas Tsimikas’ corner beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic in the 118th minute. The former Manchester United right-back and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville called Chelsea “blue billion-pound bottlejobs”.

One Day premieres: Hotly-anticipated British romantic drama series One Day premieres on Netflix. Based on the 2009 novel by David Nicholls as well as the 2011 film adaptation. It stars Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall in the lead roles.

MTA EMA awards: It was announced the MTV EMA awards were to be held in Manchester for the very first time. The star-studded ceremony would take place in November at the newly-opened Co-op live arena. Hosted by Rita Ora this would be the seventh time the awards had been held in the UK.
