Well, here we are in the dying embers of 2024.
It’s been the best of years and the worst of years, abundant with major conflicts, Royal controversies, sporting events, and Labour back in government for the first time in 14 years.
While gorging on yet another mince pie and finally finishing that wretched bottle of Bailey’s, it’s time to review the year. It’s been a bit of an odd one. I mean, what really happened?
Let’s begin, in the usual order, with January:
UK News
Post Office scandal: Then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would overturn and compensate hundreds of postmasters prosecuted due to the faulty Horizon IT system publicised in the ITV drama “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” and the companion documentary.
World News
Littler vs Humphries: In an all-English final, Luke Humphries claimed his PDC World Darts Championship with a 7-4 win over 16-year-old Warrington wunderkind Luke Littler at the Alexandra Palace, London. Littler is one of the nominees for the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Sport
Jurgen Klopp quits: Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The German – who ended the Reds’ thirty-year wait for a league title in 2020 – had guided the club to another Wembley final two days before.
Entertainment
Fool Me Once: The British thriller television series adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel of the same name premiered on Netflix on New Year’s Day, starring Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage and Joanna Lumley. Keegan was nominated for Drama Performance at the 29th National Television Awards.
Greater Manchester
De Bruyne returns: Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury off the bench with Manchester City 2-1 down away to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. He equalised in the 74th minute before providing a sublime assist for a 91st-minute Oscar Bobb winner. City looked ominous.
