Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Nozuka performed in the Northern Quarter on Friday night in the last week of his North American and European international tour for his latest album ‘Chlorine’.
The small but purpose built standing-room-only venue Off the Square in Manchester was the choice for the third and final show of Nozuka’s UK stops before he continues on to Amsterdam on Tuesday.
Nozuka is known for his emotional and realistic songs which tell stories of sometimes tough subjects and the rollercoaster of relationships.
Off the Square offers only a little space between the audience and the artist. Justin came on and began his set without a word and immediately began the show with songs from his latest album just released in September.
Starting on the electric guitar with his song ‘SUV’ Nozuka quickly switched to the acoustic guitar for ‘Orange Lampshade”, and back again for ‘Paranoid’.
Taking a break to thank everyone for coming, Nozuka extended his hand from the stage to audience members within reach and personally shook each person’s hand whilst acknowledging that “times are hard”, and his gratitude to everyone for coming out to the show.
After a few songs sans guitar using recorded tracks, the show became even more personal and intimate when Nozuka grabbed a stool, picked up his acoustic guitar and took audience requests.
Honouring audience requests with grace, he admitted that some tracks weren’t possible without his full band, but played other’s off the cuff with a disclaimer that it had been a while.
With over 15 years of experience playing venues big and small, his lyrically-rich music is especially suited for performing in a small venue, making each song feel that much more personal and poignant.
The audience held their breath for the quietest moments of ‘Golden Train’ from his first album ‘Holly’- named affectionately after his mom, who raised him and his 6 siblings.
They bellowed along for his hit ‘After tonight’, and moaned for an encore which Justin kindly granted- singing acapella with the audience again joining in.
It was a unique show that brought the audience together. Fans of Justin Nozuka smiled realising those around them recognised the old-the new- the singles- and the many moments of complex vocal vibrato that makes Justin Nozuka’s voice so captivating- raspy lows and high improv notes.
Justin Nozuka wrapped up his hour-long set, and quickly joined the audience downstairs. Just as chill and laid back in person as he was on the stage, he chatted to his fans, allowed photos and autographs, and even a few questions.
When asked about his time in Manchester he said: “It’s very lively tonight especially- a lot of people, a lot of energy. We got some Chinese food which was incredible.”
Nozuka’s next performance will be in Amsterdam on December 3.
