Manchester City Council has launched a second consultation for new plans that aim to ease congestion and create safer walking routes in the city centre.
The consultation – launched on Monday – seeks feedback on updated proposed plans which include reorganising bus stops and widening footpaths, particularly at junctions with high pedestrian traffic, and specifically regarding John Dalton Street and Bridge Street.
The updates to the plans follow on from a consultation earlier in the year when the council received feedback from 200 participants on plans to make the two streets “nicer, safer and greener”. Concerns were mostly based on potential traffic flow.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “These two streets are some of the most-used routes in the city. It’s important that we ensure the public’s views are reflected in any future changes that may take place.
“We need to make bold changes.”
Proposed plans include making bus stops into laybys to allow them to accommodate two buses, minimising their effect on traffic flow.
The second round of consultation on the proposed changes to Bridge Street and John Dalton Street, designed to make the areas safer places to use, is now live until 5 January 2025.

Footfall is high in Manchester – it receives the second highest number of international visits in the UK (ONS, 2021).
Representatives from Manchester City Council set up a stall on King Street on Thursday (featured image) where they sought to raise awareness of the consultation.
The project is part of the council’s wider ambition to encourage people to use more environmentally friendly modes of transport.
A press representative from the council said: “The council has long been a proponent of improving access and mobility for people who want to travel through Manchester.”
The consultation will run until 5 January 2025 and the council will hold public meetings for people to ask questions and provide feedback.
