Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hits back at sacking rumours

Erik ten Hag has hit back at the “fairy tales” surrounding his future at Manchester United as they prepare to host Brentford on Saturday in the Premier League.

United have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season, with eight points from their opening seven games, most recently drawing at Villa Park before the international break.

Their barren run has increased the pressure on Ten Hag’s job, despite previous frontrunner Thomas Tuchel’s recent appointment as England manager.

Ten Hag said: Noise is only coming from some of you in the media, creating stories and fairy tales, and bringing lies.

“Journalists didn’t believe me. I saw the reports. Of course, we are unhappy with the position where we are.

“Ultimately, internally it is quiet and composed. We stick to the plan and are very convinced it will be a success.”

United are 14th, three places below Brentford, having scored five goals this season – only Southampton have scored less.

Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are sidelined, but Noussair Mazraoui is available after undergoing minor heart surgery last week.

Brentford have no fresh injury concerns, but Yoane Wissa may return after missing the last three Premier League games.

The Bees won 5-3 against Wolves in their last game and have scored in the opening two minutes in their last four league games.

The two sides last met at the Gtech Community Stadium in March drawing 1-1, with Mason Mount and Kristoffer Ajer’s scoring deep into stoppage time.
