Despite his team’s poor start to the season, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana currently leads the way for the league’s Golden Glove award having kept four clean sheets.
The Red Devils have endured their worst league start in decades and sit in 14th position after 7 games.
Having conceded 8 goals in those games, the team’s defensive stats don’t look too bad, with only four teams in the league having conceded fewer.
And, following the goalless draw against Aston Villa, United’s Andre Onana, who came in for heavy criticism at the beginning of his tenure, now leads the race for the Golden Glove.
The Golden Glove is awarded to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets at the end of the campaign.
Onana has four clean sheets from seven appearances, beating out Alisson Becker and David Raya, who have both kept three clean sheets each.
It is only early in the season, and despite Onana currently leading the way, bookmakers don’t fancy his chances of holding on to the top position.
Raya is the favourite to take the accolade at the end of the season at odds of around 3/2.
In contrast, Onana is the 7th favourite with odds ranging from 16/1 to 28/1 and punters could get even longer odds by using elevated odds or trying newly licensed bookmakers.
According to iGaming analyst Peter Addison, new bookmakers commonly offer improved odds and access to more enhanced odds to help attract new signups.
Manchester United’s eight points from their first seven games is the worst start to a season they have endured since the Premier League competition began, albeit only one point worse than their record last season.
As a result of this poor start, manager Eric Ten Hag is the bookie’s favourite to be the next Prem manager to get the sack, with odds of around 1/2 to get the boot.
And that’s despite the club’s hierarchy giving him their backing, just about, in the past week as well as during the summer when Ten Hag signed a new contract with the club.
Clubs are currently midway through the international break which means Man Utd won’t be in action now until 19th October, when they face Brentford who are currently two points above them.
Although Onana has kept more clean sheets than not, this season, when his goal is breached, it comes under considerable fire.
The three games that United have conceded have seen them lose 2-1 to Brighton, 3-0 to Liverpool, and 3-0 to Tottenham.
As well as these big losses, the Red Devils have been shown to really struggle in front of goal.
Only winless Southampton, who are second to bottom of the table, have scored fewer than United’s five goals this season.
The club will be pinning their hopes on Onana continuing his record of clean sheets while hoping for some of their attacking players to step up to the plate, if they are to improve on last season’s eighth-placed finish – their worst-ever Premier League finish.
