Manchester gives an artistic nod to Black History Month

Important black figures have been showcased across Manchester this October to commemorate Black History Month.

Mancunian Matters conducted a whistle-stop tour to see how the city is celebrating.

Whitworth Art Gallery has presented over 70 works of Barbara Walker MBE – a Birmingham artist whose work addresses misunderstandings and stereotypes about the African-Caribbean community in Britain.

This sculpture of Erinma Bell MBE is made from recycled handguns to pay homage to her work tackling gun crime in Moss Side and Longsight.
A plaque on the University of Manchester’s Arthur Lewis Building – which commemorates him as Britain’s first black professor.
Abraham Lincoln thanked the people of Manchester in 1863 who supported his anti-slavery cotton blockade. His statue was erected in Platt Fields in 1919 and was moved to Lincoln Square in 1986.
