Plans for the UK’s first LGBTQ+ extra care housing scheme were approved by Manchester City Council’s planning and highways committee today.
The 80-bedroom development – named Russell Road – will be built on the site of south Manchester’s demolished Spire Hospital with nearly all tenants being 55+ year old members of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community.
Actor Sir Ian McKellen, on behalf of the Pride in Ageing Programme, said: “It’s wonderful to see Manchester leading the way yet again.
“Our community deserves to be able to age in a safe and welcoming environment where we are accepted for who we are, and Russell Road will do just that.”
Russel Road aims to provide an inclusive and psychological safe place for the older LGBTQ+ community alongside support services and in-house care.
Older LGBTQ+ people are at greater risk of discrimination, poor health and social isolation.
Paul Martin, CEO at LGBT Foundation, said: “This scheme aims to address these challenges and create a safe and affirming environment where our community can age with pride.”
The site will also include 40 homes with a mix of one- or two-bed apartments.
Development will begin later this year.
