Moulin Rouge! The Musical comes to Manchester

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is coming to Manchester next year for an extended eight-week run as part of its first world tour.

The hit musical, directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, is heading to Manchester’s Palace Theatre from Wednesday, August 20 to Saturday, October 4, it was announced today.

And the show’s producers – Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan from Global Creatures – are confident it will be a smash hit with Mancunians.

Pavlovic said: “It is thrilling that the Manchester Palace will host Moulin Rouge! The Musical next year as part of its world tour.

“Manchester is such a welcoming, lively and culturally vibrant city, world renowned for its rich artistic and musical heritage.

“A city also known for defending free speech and liberty of opinion, so we know that the bohemians and artisans of the Montmartre will be embraced with open arms.”

An adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film of the same name, the musical charts the tale of an English writer who becomes embroiled in Bohemian Parisian nightlife on the cusp of the 20th century.

He falls in love with the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, the city’s biggest nightclub.

The film, starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and won Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2002 BAFTA Awards.

The musical itself won 10 Tony Awards in 2021 – including Best Musical – as well as an Olivier Award, two Drama League awards and five Drama Desk Awards.

With orchestrations and arrangements from Tony Award winner Justin Levine, the musical boasts a wide range of musical genres spanning more than 160 years, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical previously toured throughout Australia and is currently playing on Broadway, the West End, Cologne in Germany, and performing a North American tour.

Its first world tour will begin in Edinburgh in April 2025, with the cast yet to be announced.
