Broady relishing return of Davis Cup to Manchester

Liam Broady can’t wait to see the prestigious Davis Cup return to Manchester once again this year.

The competition, widely regarded as the World Cup of Tennis, returns to the AO Arena from 10-15 September with the Lexus GB Davis Cup team set to take on Argentina, Canada and Finland for a place in the knockout stages in Malaga in November.

Stockport star Broady, fresh from competing at Wimbledon, made a visit to St Malachy’s Primary School on Friday to take part in a tennis session with a group of pupils who have been inspired to play the sport after attending the Davis Cup last year.

And speaking ahead of the hotly-anticipated Davis Cup, the 30-year-old said: “It’s brilliant to have the Davis Cup in Manchester again.

“It was an amazing event last year with 13,000 people there on the final day with an incredible atmosphere.

“It will be even better this year and a great opportunity for people in the noth-west to enjoy one of the biggest tennis events on the planet.”

The Davis Cup returned to Manchester in 2023 for the first time in 30 years and was packed with all the drama and action the competition is renowned for.

Captain Leon Smith’s team, which included Sir Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Cam Norrie, saw their bid to make the knockout stages of the competition go down to the wire with Dan Evans and Neal Skupski securing the victory in the final, winner-takes-all match against France, in front of a record 13,000 strong crowd.

Lifelong Manchester City fan Broady ticked an item off his bucket list at this year’s Wimbledon by meeting City boss Pep Guardiola – and is relishing the success of fellow Stockport natives Phil Foden, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer at the Euros.

He added: “Fred Perry was an eight-time Grand Slam champion from Portwood and now with these guys it gives me great pride in the area to show what people from Stockport can do, it’s fantastic.”

Tickets for the Davis Cup start from £5 for under 18s and £10 for adults and are available via the LTA’s website – https://www.lta.org.uk/DavisCupTickets
