New Year’s Day swimmers take the plunge for Manchester hospice

Hundreds of swimmers gathered in Salford Quays on 1 January to fundraise for St Ann’s Hospice.

Under the supervision of open water swimming company USwim, people braved the eight-degree water on New Year’s Day for charity.

St Ann’s Hospice provides specialist palliative for those with life-limiting illnesses across Greater Manchester.

Swimmer Russ Magnall said: “It was very cold this morning but refreshing.

“You get a good sense of achievement once you’ve done it – and you get a hot Vimto.

“It is a privilege to be a part of the fundraising today here in Manchester.”

The swimmers raised over £4000.

The youngest participant in the New Year’s Day swim was seven years old.
