Trafford Liberal Democrats have announced local councillor Jane Brophy will stand as their representative in Altrincham and Sale West at the next general election.
She intends to tackle issues including inflation, the cost-of-living crisis and environmental damage caused by pollution.
Councillor Brophy said: “It’s such an honour to be chosen to represent the Liberal Democrats in Altrincham and Sale West. This is my home and I raised my family here.
“People across Altrincham and Sale West deserve so much better. At the next election, a vote for the Liberal Democrats will be a vote for a strong local champion who offers the change that we desperately need.”
Councillor Brophy, a Timperley resident who works for the NHS as a dietitian at Wythenshawe Hospital, has been involved in public life for 20 years. Her record includes a period as Liberal Democrat MEP in the European Parliament between 2019 and 2020.
She will fight the Conservatives for the seat currently held by Sir Graham Brady, the longstanding MP who has represented the area since 1997 but recently announced his intention to stand down at the next election, citing his desire to pursue other opportunities.
Sir Graham, who was elected at the age of 29, is perhaps best known for his role as the longest-serving chair of the 1922 Committee, which oversaw votes of confidence against both Boris Johnson and Theresa May.
This is the fourth time Cllr Brophy will fight for the seat, having lost to the Conservatives in 2010, 2015 and 2017.
She is set to compete against 29-year-old lawyer Oliver Carroll (Conservative), Ben Hartley (Labour) and Geraldine Coggins (Green Party).
